You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town, you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day. Overnight at Weru Weru River Lodge (or alternative).
Just an hour from Moshi, you’ll reach the Machame Gate for registration and to meet your porters. The climb begins through lush, dense rainforest, following a steadily rising trail that can be muddy, wet, and slightly overgrown in places.
The trail continues through the forest before climbing steeply onto the Shira Plateau, offering impressive views of Kilimanjaro. Looking back, you’ll also see Mt. Meru towering above Arusha in the distance.
You’ll leave the pine forest and ascend steadily through open moorland, enjoying stunning views of Kibo’s eastern ice fields. The trail then branches toward the jagged Mawenzi peaks. Camp is set in a sheltered valley near the Kikelewa Caves at 3,630m.
We descend into the Great Barranco ravine, then climb the long but non-technical Barranco Wall. After passing below the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we continue toward the Karanga Valley—the final water point before the summit. The route then turns into dry, scree-covered terrain as we make our way to Barafu Camp.
We begin the final ascent at midnight, climbing steep scree for 4–5 hours toward the summit glaciers. Reaching Stella Point (5739m) at sunrise offers stunning crater views and sights of Mawenzi. After another hour, we arrive at Uhuru Peak (5895m), the summit of Kilimanjaro. We descend back to Stella Point, continue down the scree to Barafu Camp for breakfast, and then head to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.
A gentle trek takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and receive certificates, which you can hang up with pride! We are then met by our vehicles and return to the hotel in Moshi, where you can treat yourself to a welcome shower (and a cold beer or two!) before our big celebration. Overnight at the Weru Weru River Lodge (or alternative).
The day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on flight times you could go and explore Moshi town and grab some souvenirs before heading to the airport. We also welcome you spare an hour of your day to plant a tree, as part of our environmental conservation efforts in the Kilimanjaro region. Safari and Zanzibar add-ons are available if you wish to continue exploring Tanzania
