Oldoinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in Maasai, is a 2962m active volcano near Lake Natron in northern Tanzania. It is the world’s only carbonatite volcano and erupts roughly every seven years. From the summit, you get views of Lake Natron to the north, Ngorongoro Highlands to the south, Kilimanjaro to the east, and the Rift Valley escarpments to the west. The mountain is sacred to the Maasai and known for its dramatic crater and unique volcanic activity.

From the summit, you get views of Lake Natron to the north, Ngorongoro Highlands to the south, Kilimanjaro to the east, and the Rift Valley escarpments to the west. The mountain is sacred to the Maasai and known for its dramatic crater and unique volcanic activity.
After an early breakfast, depart Arusha at 7:00am for Ngaresero Village near Lake Natron, an 8-hour drive with a packed lunch en route. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge or campsite. That night, you begin your ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai—the world’s only natrocarbonatite-lava volcano and Tanzania’s most active. Standing at 2586m, it is sacred to the Maasai, who call it the Mountain of God, the home of their deity Enkai.
Wake up at 1:00am for tea and biscuits, then drive to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai to begin your ascent, aiming to reach the summit for sunrise. After enjoying the view, descend the mountain and return to camp for rest.
After breakfast, depart for Arusha with a packed lunch. Enjoy the scenic drive and expect to arrive in Arusha by evening.
