The Lemosho route is a scenic, low-traffic trail that begins on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After a drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, the first two days move through rich rainforest before reaching the Shira Plateau. It is one of the most beautiful and successful routes for acclimatization. We recommend at least 7 days, with 8 days offering even better summit success. The trail merges with the Machame route at Shira 2 Camp, follows the southern circuit, and descends via Mweka Gate.
Please note that our itinerary is fully flexible and can be adjusted to suit your preferences and requirements.

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. You will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.
You’ll be picked up from your hotel at 8:00am and transferred to the Lemosho Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side. After registration, you begin a steady climb through the lush Lemosho forest, ending your day at Big Tree Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
The trail follows the ridge out of the forest and into open moorland, leading you toward Barranco Camp. This camp—surrounded by giant senecios and lobelias—is considered the most scenic on the Umbwe route. Set in a valley, it enjoys beautiful views but a later sunrise.
Climb steadily across the Shira Plateau with panoramic views and a unique look at the Northern Ice Fields and Kibo. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, take an afternoon acclimatization walk, then return for dinner and overnight.
Your trek starts with an ascent with far-reaching panoramic views, walking in to the climatic zone of the upland desert and on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. You will reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m), our high point for the day and a great place to enjoy your lunch. In the afternoon we make a steep descent to our camp for the night, located in the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), sheltered by towering cliffs but with extensive views of the plains below.
Descend into the Great Barranco and climb the Barranco Wall—long and tiring but non-technical. Pass beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, then continue toward Karanga Valley. Make a steep ascent to Karanga Camp (3963m). Strong climbers may take an afternoon acclimatization hike to 4200m before returning to camp.
After breakfast, continue the ascent to Barafu Camp (4640m), crossing steep, barren scree slopes. The altitude makes this section challenging. On arrival, have lunch and rest for the afternoon while staying warm and hydrated. After an early dinner, get some sleep before waking around 11:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m. to begin the summit attempt.
Start the summit climb around midnight, ascending steep scree for 4–5 hours to Stella Point (5739m) at sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak (5895m) for summit views. Begin descent via Stella Point back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then continue down to Millennium Camp for rest.
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, complete park formalities, and receive your certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a shower and celebration. Overnight at Weru Weru River Lodge (or alternative).
AThe day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on flight times you could go and explore
Moshi town and grab some gift shops before heading to the airport.
Safari, Zanzibar and other add-ons are available if you wish to continue exploring Tanzania
