The Machame Route (“Whiskey Route”) is a popular, scenic Kilimanjaro trek starting from the southwest, ascending steeply through the Shira Plateau, and joining the Lemosho route at Shira Camp. It’s steeper than Marangu but offers better acclimatization through “trek high, sleep low.” Minimum 6 days; 7 days recommended for optimal rest and summit success.
Please note that our itinerary is fully flexible and can be adjusted to suit your preferences and requirements.

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. You will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.
Depart Moshi at 8am for Umbwe Gate to meet your trekking team and complete registration. Begin the steep, often slippery trail through Kilimanjaro’s lush cloud forest, which later opens into heathers, tall grasses, and wildflowers. After about 6 hours of hiking, arrive at Cave Bivouac Camp, where your porters and cooks—who have gone ahead—will have camp set up for you.
Continue following the ridge as the trail leaves the forest and enters open moorlands. Trek onward until you reach Barranco Camp, considered the most scenic site on the Umbwe Route thanks to its giant senecios and lobelias. Nestled in a valley, Barranco enjoys beautiful views but experiences a later sunrise than the other camps.
Extra Day for Acclimatization. Adding this day will ease your effort, and amplify your acclimatization.
After breakfast, leave Barranco Camp and begin a 1.5-hour scramble up the Barranco Wall—the toughest section of the day, requiring occasional hand support. Once on top, cross relatively level terrain before descending steeply into the lush Karanga Valley.
After breakfast, hike toward Barafu Camp through the alpine desert, passing the junction that links the Mweka descent route with the Machame trail. Along the way, enjoy views of Kibo’s glaciers—including the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. Barafu Camp provides impressive panoramas of both Kibo and Mawenzi. Have an early dinner and rest well, as the summit push begins before midnight.
Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Hike steeply to Stella Point, then continue gradually to the summit. Take in the stunning views, capture photos, and begin your descent via Barafu Camp for breakfast, continuing to Mweka Camp.
After breakfast, complete the trek by hiking through the forest to Mweka Gate. Vehicles will meet you at the gate to transfer back to Moshi.
AThe day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on flight times you could go and explore
Moshi town and grab some gift shops before heading to the airport.
Safari, Zanzibar and other add-ons are available if you wish to continue exploring Tanzania
