The Rongai Route starts on Kilimanjaro’s northeastern side near the Kenyan border, rising above the Amboseli plains toward the summit west of Mawenzi Peak. It is less crowded and considered the easiest camping route. Descents typically use the Marangu Route. Summit can be attempted via Mawenzi Tarn Hut (longer, more popular) or School Hut (requires prior acclimatization).
Please note that our itinerary is fully flexible and can be adjusted to suit your preferences and requirements.

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. You will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.
Drive to Nale Moru village to start the Rongai Route. Trek through farmland and pine forests, spotting wildlife like Colobus monkeys, elephants, or buffalo. Overnight at Simba Camp at 2,625 m.
The morning hike is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave Camp located in the moorland zone with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim.
Ascend through moorland with views of Kibo’s eastern ice fields, then head toward Mawenzi peaks, camping near Kikelewa Caves at 3,630 m.
Steep morning ascent up grassy slopes with views of the Kenyan plains, reaching Mawenzi Tarn Hut for rest and optional exploration.
We leave our campsite and cross the lunar desert of the ‘saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo After a couple hours trekking, reach this spectacular place, with the summit of Kilimanjaro in the background and our trail to the high camp stretched out before our eyes. Upon reaching our camp the remainder of the day will be spent resting in preparation of the final ascent after a very early night!
Begin the final ascent around midnight, climbing past Hans Meyer Cave toward the crater rim. Reach Gillman’s Point at sunrise, then continue 1–2 hours to Uhuru Peak (5895m). After celebrating the summit, descend to Kibo Hut for a hot meal and rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.
Descend through the heath and moorland to Mandara Hut (2700m) for a warm lunch. Continue down into the lush tropical rainforest and trek for a total of about 6 hours to reach the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After bidding farewell to your guides, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and a well-deserved celebration of your summit achievement.
AThe day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on flight times you could go and explore
Moshi town and grab some gift shops before heading to the airport.
